Common Repairs and Upgrades

Computers, like any complex machinery, may encounter wear and tear or become less efficient as technology advances. Recognising when your computer needs a repair or could benefit from an upgrade is crucial for keeping it running smoothly and extending its usability. In this section of the Auckland Geeks Guide to Computer Repair, we explore common computer repairs and upgrades, shedding light on how they can address various issues and improve your computer’s performance.

Understanding Repairs

Repairs typically address physical or software failures that prevent your computer from functioning correctly. Here are a few common repair scenarios:

The hard drive is where all your data and operating system reside. Over time, hard drives can fail due to mechanical wear or software corruption, leading to data loss or system instability. Replacing a failing hard drive with a new HDD or upgrading to an SSD can significantly improve reliability and performance.

Laptop screens are susceptible to damage from drops, pressure, or accidents. A cracked or malfunctioning screen can severely impact your computing experience. Screen replacements restore full functionality to your laptop, ensuring clear and uninterrupted visuals.

Laptop batteries degrade over time, holding less charge and reducing portability. Replacing an old battery can restore your laptop’s ability to hold a charge, making it as mobile as intended.

Overheating can cause your computer to shut down unexpectedly, potentially damaging internal components. Cleaning out dust, replacing thermal paste, or repairing cooling fans are common solutions to prevent overheating problems.

Considering Upgrades

Upgrades involve replacing or adding hardware to improve performance, capacity, or features. Here are some popular upgrades:

Increasing your computer’s RAM (Random Access Memory) can dramatically improve its ability to multitask and handle more demanding applications. This upgrade is particularly beneficial for users who run multiple programs simultaneously or use memory-intensive software.

Replacing a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) with a solid state drive (SSD) is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make. SSDs offer faster data access times, improving boot times, application launch speeds, and overall system responsiveness.

For gamers, video editors, or professionals using graphic-intensive applications, upgrading the graphics card can enhance visual performance, support higher resolutions, and provide smoother rendering of 3D graphics.

Understanding the signs that your computer needs a repair or could benefit from an upgrade is essential for maintaining its performance and extending its lifespan.

Communication from the start with Gareth was outstanding, great Customer Service. Jason was our tech and he was absolutely brilliant - he listened, then explained and showed me what he meant. He was patient and most of all understood I wasn't an IT Geek. We have another laptop which we will be getting Auckland Geeks to look at next week. Thoroughly recommend, outstanding from start to finish.

Disappointed, of course, that my iMac bit the dust after 8 years faithful service but Jack from Auckland Geeks did a great job identifying the issue(s), talking me through the options and supporting me as I moved on. I appreciated Jack’s clear, informed and friendly approach - communication was excellent and his service was most professional.
